THE UNAMERICAN UNDIET FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER

Keeping the Streak Alive

Welcome to February, and if you’re reading this, perhaps you’re also buried in several feet of snow. Perhaps you’re also looking for a way to make the most of the new found time at home.

When confronted with the idle time, the problem for me usually becomes the opposite of the usual crunch. So little to do, so much time to do it in. Of course, the end result winds up being much the same.

I’ve learned that I can be much more diligent in my work ethic if I schedule what it is I have to do ahead of time. There’s no reason you can’t build your workouts into your calendar. Plan the time ahead and make a commitment to that schedule.

Plan to drop everything at the exact allotted time to start your workout. If you can habitually drop everything and go to work every morning at 8am, you can work out 3 or 4 times a week with the same level of commitment. I think if you had to choose between your job and your health, you’d choose your health. If not, I think this blog may not reach you.

My schedule is simple, and does not generally involve times (at least not for my workouts).  I set the precedent years ago that I would exercise every other day, no exceptions.

A side effect of scheduling is that it can free you from the guilt of not doing the scheduled activity. Since you’ve set a timeframe when you are exercising, you don’t need to beat yourself up about not exercising that very moment. “I should be going to the gym right now” becomes “I got my workout in yesterday, and tomorrow I’ll get another one in.”

As I write this, I crossed a new threshold just a few weeks ago. I have followed my scheduled bi-daily work outs for more than 1250 days straight. Three years plus. But I did it one day at a time.

I will be working out odd-numbered days in February.

What are you doing this month?
