What's wrong with being American?
Nothing!! But America has become the world's fattest country, with two-thirds of us overweight and one-third of us obese. I've come to realize there are some perceptible differences in the way Americans live their lives that make us a little thicker around the middle.
I was born in America, I have lived the vast majority of my life here, but at one point in my life I got close to the clinical definition for obese, and I had to re-evaluate how it happened. I stopped "dieting" and made some lifelong changes. I stopped eating junk food, started exercising smarter, and I stopped trying quick fixes. In short, I stopped acting like an American.
Then I lost forty pounds.
I realized we don't think about food like the rest of the world. And we're not treating our weight problem in the right way.
The media has dubbed this the Obesity Epidemic... but that's not quite accurate.
In the dark ages, the Death Plague devastated the globe. People were catching Death from each other, and entire villages were burned to prevent the spread of the Death Plague.
Of course, it was more aptly named the Black Plague. The worst effect of the plague was obviously death. To call it the Death Plague only focuses on the symptom of the disease. The same way that calling it the obesity epidemic misses the mark. Its really gluttony and sloth that are ravaging the globe, and especially America, leaving obesity in its wake as the Bubonic Plague left death behind it.
What does this mean? Americans aren't addressing the problem. We're treating symptoms instead of causes. Learn more here about The UnAmerican Undiet , and how it can change everything for anyone who's ever lost weight and then found it again. |
