WHAT'S SO UNAMERICAN ABOUT LOSING WEIGHT?

With two-thirds of Americans overweight, many would call into question the effectiveness of our billion dollar weight loss industry.   But comedian Pete D'Alessandro has some theories behind that, and he tells how Americans can swing the pendulum the other way.   D'Alessandro spells it out in his new book: The UnAmerican Undiet: A Cure for the American Diet Problem, By a Comedian (Not a Communist) now available on Amazon.com.

Edited by comedy writer Alison Flierl (Joey, My Mom's Just Not That Into Me), the book details D'Alessandro's journey through losing the weight that had plagued him his whole life.   After serving as Project Manager on TLC's Clean Sweep, weight and depression had taken their toll, and left D'Alessandro barely motivated enough to work.   "I hit my heaviest, 196 pounds, just after Clean Sweep ended.   Then one day something snapped and I decided to make this my last endeavor in losing weight."

Since then, D'Alessandro has stayed around 160 lbs.   He says it has a lot more to do with your mind than body.   "We're always being told to look thin and beautiful, and then around every corner, someone's trying to sell us a pill that can do the work for us.   I realized that if Americans are the fattest people in the world, then there must be a reason.   When I stopped doing the most American of behaviors, I lost weight faster than ever."

Forty-one satirical illustrations by Eric Felter break the routine of a typical weight loss book, adding a new dimension entirely.   Flierl, who slimmed down herself after editing the book, added:   "Pete brings insight, wisdom, and understanding into becoming a new, thin person.   He leads by example and creates a path and a vision for readers to share and follow."
